starlette van dyke-avatar
Starlette Van Dyke is an avatar, a fictional identity constructed for the virtual terrains of Second Life*. Starlette appears in a series of screen captures playing out multiple roles, putting on different costumes and moving through animated environments that range from city streets to lonely highways.
These screen captures–or digital snapshots–echo Cindy Sherman’s photographic stills of female stereotypes, in her Untitled Film Stills 1977-1980. Looking at Sherman’s series, I was inspired by how she explored the changing modalities of selfhood and captured these shifts cinematically. With my project, Starlette Van Dyke, I hope to examine representations of identity, as well as the related–often interchangeable–positions of authorship and spectatorship.
* Second Life is a 3D online digital world generated by Linden Labs. By creating avatars (or online personae), users may model, build, and interact with other users and environments.
